SO GOOD. This is setting up to be a bit of a slow boil paranormal romance, and this first book was a focus on setting up the world building and introducing the characters. It does an EXCELLENT job of getting that rolling!Danica is a sort of witch who largely acts as a bounty hunter for the local mage’s council, and she uses her job as cover to chase what she really needs: the name of the being who murdered her mother.Unfortunately, in the course of making these inquiries, Danica pisses off one of the most powerful demons in the country if not the world. Samael is enraged by her pulling her schtick in his night club, which is a sort of neutral zone, especially as it gets the demon she’s questioning killed. But Samael goes from enraged to intrigued, and that might just be worse.Danica’s now got a countdown on her freedom if she wants to get out of this unscathed, and if she can’t figure out who is murdering demons in two weeks, she belongs to Samael forever. Mux in witches of all stripes, the fae, the werewolves, and her own questionable antecedents, and Danica is forced to hit the ground running.What worked so wonderfully for this book is that Danica *is* an ass kicker, but it’s in a completely believable way. She’s not playing in god-mode, she’s not untouchable, and her own trauma essentially makes her one of the walking wounded. You genuinely ache for Danica, for her to solve all of the mysteries tangled up in her own past that are threatening her present, and for her to find peace.You also *really* ache for Danica and Samael to bang. Bring on book two! Okay, I'll admit it. This is the first book I've read in a while that I have not been able to put down. Not my usual genre but a great story line is a great story line. I highly recommend giving this book and series a chance. I think you'll love it too.
